Simple idea of cancelling the acting drifts from the first half of the ring by second half leads to the figure-8 configuration |
Considering just a toroidal magnetic field of a tokamak with a moderate number of circulating charged particles one does not get a proper long time confinement. That is because of the centrifugal force which applies a R×B drift to the particles orientated perpendicular to the torus plane. After a finite amount of time the particles would hit the top or bottomof the toroidal tokamak machine [Joshi, 2009, S.5-6][Niebuhr, 2012, S.5-7]. The design of the F8SR should compensate the mentioned drift in average via a secondary attached torus. In this torus the particles experience a drift in the opposite direction. In addition to that the eight shaped both one another attached and tilted tori cause a special shaped magnetic fieldline geometry. This torsion is represented by the parameter of the rotational transform. Its value determines the formation of magnetic surfaces within the F8SR.
